Seen as a more effective method than traditional massage because of the stones’ wonders in promoting muscle relaxation and tension release, hot stone therapy is often preferred by a lot of people who are in dire need of giving themselves a chance to unwind.

But in getting a hot stone massage, there are certain things you have to know and follow. Here are some of the major do’s and don’ts that you should keep in mind:

Do’s

• Schedule your appointment in advance. This will give the therapist or the spa book appointments more efficiently. Once you’ve booked your schedule, be sure to show up. Cancelling the last minute or not showing up is a very impolite thing to do.

• Arrive on time. This will give you time to relax before your session which is optimal in getting the best massage experience. Arriving early will also give you the chance to enjoy the spa’s facilities such as steam bath, sauna or whirlpool.

• Drink plenty of water before and after the therapy. Massage is known to release unhealthy toxins and drinking plenty of water helps a lot in flushing them out.

• Turn off your phone. Shun the outside world even for a few minutes and let this time be quality time for yourself.

• Relax. Take your mind off anything and imagine yourself in a calming place where there’s nothing left to do but to rest and relax.

• Discuss with your therapist any concerns and preferences that you may have about the session.

• Go to the bathroom before the session starts. Standing up, getting dressed and going to the restroom can surely interrupt the flow of the therapy and ruin the relaxing ambience of the place.

• Give your therapist a 10-15% tip. You may give even more if you are very pleased with the service. To further show appreciation, you can also make referrals to your family and friends.

Don’ts

• Don’t eat a heavy meal at least one hour before the session so you won’t feel bloated and uncomfortable. If you must eat, have a couple of light crackers instead.

•Don’t think of work or chores. This is your time to relax and it’s absolutely forbidden to let the letters w-o-r-k slip into your mind. You will only experience the optimum benefits of massage if you are able to relax your mind.

• Don’t feel obliged to engage in a conversation with your therapist if you want to enjoy the therapy silently.

• Don’t tighten up your muscles during the session because this is more difficult to relieve.

• Don’t wear perfume or apply lotion on your skin prior to the therapy. Perfumes are not advisable since you’ll be staying in an enclosed room. Wearing scents may suffocate your therapist while a lotion may interfere with the massage oil or lotion to be used in the session.

• Don’t get off the table immediately after the therapy. Feeling a little light headed or dizzy after a massage is normal. That’s why it’s important that you let yourself rest for a couple of minutes before getting up.

More and more people are turning to hot stone massage as a way to take a break from the usual grind of life which includes stressful office work, house chores and taking care of kids. By knowing these tips, you will be able to experience the best kind of therapy there is.

Have a great day!

More than 100 million Americans suffer with some form of chronic back pain. This epidemic problem, represents the number one reason for lost productivity and efficiency in American Corporations today. Whether you suffer with lower, middle, or upper back pain, it can be both debilitating, and compromising toward one’s work and lifestyle, making it difficult or even impossible to perform the most basic daily tasks.

Because of technological advances in the past 50 years alone, it is not uncommon for us to find ourselves sitting for long periods of time; weather in traffic, relaxing at home or just working on the computer for hours on end. What most of us don’t realize, is that sitting is inherently bad for the back. Why? Because the seated posture creates an imbalance in the spine, which causes the back to age at an accelerated rate. It’s no surprise then, that back problems have become the nemesis of our time, creating problems for millions of people everywhere. And when lifestyle or cultural practices become a contributing factor in back pain, then it’s essential that we adopt effective strategies for improving back health and work to reduce all forms of spinal disease, which are preventable. Various remedies, when applied regularly, can result in a reduction of painful symptoms, which, when combined with a few simple corrective activities, work together to restore the overall health of the back by eliminating or even reversing the things that lead to an accelerated loss of flexibility, mobility and function.

1) Pain-relieving creams

A naturally occurring analgesic, known as “Capsaicin”, also the main ingredient found in chili peppers, can be an effective natural pain reliever. A cream or lotion preparation of Capsaicin is applied by rubbing into the skin, directly over the affected area. While an initial stinging sensation is normal, a neuro-chemical pain transmitter, known as “Substance P” becomes depleted as the Capsaicin is absorbed, resulting in a numbing of pain symptoms. Available in most health and drug stores, a typical formulation of Capsaicin cream, will have an active ingredient concentration of 0.025%.

2) Yoga and conventional exercises

Yoga, through strengthening poses and breathing techniques, has been found to decrease upper back pain and lower back pain. In a recent study, people suffering from chronic sharp back pain were monitored for 16 weeks. The results proved that with regular yoga exercise, the participants experienced a significant pain reduction in disability and intensity, as well as a lowered reliance on pain medication. People with chronic back pain can decrease their pain through yoga and conventional lower back exercises, which will exercise their muscles in order to strengthen them. Conventional exercises, such as walking, biking, and water therapy, provide conditioning that strengthen the back, thus minimizing back pain.

3) Good posture sitting and standing

Good posture, whether sitting or standing, plays a large role in maintaining the health of your back, and thus, impacts the level of back pain. Whenever you are sitting down, ensure that your feet are firmly on the floor. Make sure that your chair is comfortable and at the correct level. If you sit for extended periods of time, you can simultaneously treat your back with correcting devices, such as the comfortable Turtle, which aids relief by supporting your lower back.

When you are standing up for extended periods of time, try resting one of your legs on a step higher to give support to your lower back. Do not let your knees lock when standing straight. While you are sleeping, it is best to sleep on your back to relieve pressure that causes back pain, and you can put a pillow under your knees for support. If you lay on your stomach, also use a pillow underneath to reduce lower back pain. Pick your shoes carefully; get extra arch support and do not wear unnecessarily high-heeled shoes. If your heels are very high it will affect your posture.

4) Massage therapy

One of the main methods of back pain relief which immediately comes to the minds of people with sharp back pain is massage therapy. Many healthcare professionals are also recommending massage therapy as a legitimate means to alleviate lower back pain, as well as middle back pain and upper back pain. The popularity of this natural method of back pain relief has doubled since studies in 1997. The greatest benefit of massage therapy is the rise of endorphin levels, which makes it an effective avenue to manage chronic back pain.

5) Ice packs and heating pads

Use ice packs to relieve inflammation, pain, and swelling after an injury or extended use of the lower back muscles. Keep ice on the area of back pain several times a day. During the initial 72 hours, it is good to ice the area for approximately 10 minutes every hour. Ice only needs to be applied three times during the day after the first few days, but again with any vigorous activities.

Heat pads can also be used where there is back pain to aid in relaxing the muscles, but should not be used during the first 72 hours when an injury or onset occurs. If you apply heat immediately, it could make the inflammation and swelling worse.

6) Healthy diet that includes water

Eating nutritious foods that contain Vitamin B12, calcium, and magnesium can prevent and relieve lower back pain and upper back pain. When you ingest enough Vitamin B12, it has been found that back pain may be reduced. The most reliable sources of vitamin B12 are eggs, dairy products, and meat. Magnesium has also been studied for back pain reduction, and from the 82 people studied, 76 individuals experienced less back pain symptoms after increasing magnesium in their diets. Many green vegetables, such as spinach, are also excellent ways to get magnesium, as well as seeds and nuts. Dehydration can contribute to back pain, and thus, it is important to drink lot of water as well.

7) Products designed to solve back pain

There are many products that are designed to relieve lower and upper back pain, such as heated cushions, relaxation tapes, and exercise balls. One of the best new products is a versatile orthopedic device that has been proven to reduce lower back pain, middle back pain, and upper back pain, as well as neck pain. This revolutionary orthopedic device, called The Turtle, treats back pain while providing tremendous relief within minutes. In addition, this product is easily portable, allowing back pain sufferers to obtain the lifestyle they used to enjoy.

Whoever said that a stone massage should only be done in a spa or massage center probably has never heard of a home hot stone massage therapy. With the proper massage supplies such as hot stones and essential oils, you can give or have a hot stone massage right inside the comfort of your home.

If you plan on engaging in a massage business or if you want to give your spouse a personal hot stone massage for his birthday, here is a list of basic step-by-step directions on how to give a hot stone massage.

Step 1: Prepare the basic hot stone massage therapy equipment that you’ll need such as a massage table, linen or sheet for the table, massage oils, massage stones like basalt stones (you may need 40-50 pieces of stones), and a heating device for these stones.

Step 2: Before the client arrives, prepare the massage room by draping the massage table with clean linens and by setting up a tranquil ambiance through pleasurable aromas, low lighting and soothing music.

Step 3: Heat up the stones that you will be using.

Step 4: Once the client arrives, give him or her ample time to relax before the session. Be sure to explain the process of hot stone massage therapy.

Step 5: Ask the client to lie down on the table. Place the stones on each side of the spine without coming in actual contact with the spine.

Step 6: Begin by massaging the face lightly with a coating of oil. Place four stones on the face. Put the first stone underneath the lips, the second and third stones on each cheek and the fourth stone on the center of the forehead.

Step 7: Massage some oil on the right leg. Rub the hot stone on each side of the leg and then place small stones between each of your client’s toes on his right foot. Repeat the process with the left leg and left foot.

Step 8: Go to your client’s arm, and use the effleurage stroke to coat it with oil. Massage the arm area by using medium-sized flat stones. After that, put a warm stone on your client’s palm. Do the same thing with the other arm.

Step 9: Now, it’s time to ask your client to turn over. Remove the stones you’ve placed on the face, hands and toes.

Step 10: Massage the back area using various stones to apply pressure on key acupressure points. After massaging this area, lay one stone on each shoulder, one on each scapular area and one on the client’s lower back.

Step 11: Go to the back of your client’s legs and place a medium-sized warm stone underneath the buttocks, on the backs of the knees and on the calf.

Step 12: Massage the scalp of the client down to the neck and shoulder area.

Step 13: Remove the stones you’ve placed on the client’s body.

Step 14: For the finale, use effleurage strokes on the client’s back and leg area using the tips of your fingers.

Step 15: Give your client some time to cool down or take a short nap after the session.

With these simple guidelines, tender and gentle touch, and a determination to give the best kind of massage, your spouse or clients will surely be asking or coming back for more.

No one knows when the first person began trying to ease the soreness or discomfort from the body of another, but it probably occurred early in human evolution and from then on the history of massage began to record itself. The Chinese are believed to be the first to write about it, roughly 5000 years ago.

Today’s most popular type of massage is based on the Chinese tui na, a form of therapy that involves manipulating areas of the body to bring it into balance and increase the flow of energy. The Japanese, perhaps in imitation of their main rival, gave it their twist and created their own unique massage therapy techniques.

Massage practices can be found in every culture and ethnic group. The ancient civilizations of Rome, Greece, China, Egypt and Mesopotamia each created their own forms and favorite techniques. An early physician whom Plato referred to as the “Greek inventor of Medical Gymnastics” encouraged his pupils and patients to have their bodies rubbed.

Hippocrates, generally acknowledged as the “father of medicine”, wrote that “The physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing.” While not a proponent of the more intense and prolonged treatments that were sometimes being employed at the time, Hippocrates believed that doctors should become familiar with rubbing techniques because of the effects that it could have, especially on the joints of the body. This was one of the first examples of what has become known today as the Swedish massage.

Arguably the most famous of Romans, Julius Caesar is said to have been treated by massage therapists of his time. Writings indicate that his practitioners used a series of pinching motions in an effort to treat the emperor’s neuralgia and epileptic seizures.

Centuries later, Ambrose Paré, official royal surgeon for the kings of France, is credited with bringing back the practice of massage after the Renaissance. He advocated that having muscles and bones tweaked and turned would cause toxic fluids to diffuse and increase the body’s ability to heal.

Pehr Henrik Ling, a Swedish medical-gymnastic practitioner, is credited with the development of what is now known as Swedish massage in the early 1800′s. Many of today’s massage students start with these basic techniques and then later move into focusing on one of the more specialized forms of massage. These include deep tissue massage, sports massage, shiatsu, reflexology, hot stone massage, prenatal massage, cranial sacral massage and many others.

The lines separating one type of massage from another have blurred as practitioners experiment with ways to improve their craft. The addition of heated stones to accelerate relaxation of muscles and lessen the amount of required pressure has become a popular technique in deep tissue massage. The use of aromatherapy and essential oils has become almost standard practice for massage therapists across the board.

The history of massage is not only a fascinating study but one that continues to evolve. We can only imagine the techniques and accomplishments they will be writing about a hundred years from now!

The Most Important Decision of Your Massage Business Career
by: Elizabeth Fletcher Brown

Don’t you find that there are so many decisions you need to make each and every day regarding the direction of your massage practice. Especially if you are a solo-preneur or own your own massage business.

As a business owner myself I know at times it can seem overwhelming, wearing all the hats of massage therapist, marketer, salesperson, office administrator… and the list goes on.

Yet there is one key decision that will chart the course of your business and will ultimately determine your level of success long term. This decision will also increase your chances of staying the course till you have your ideal massage practice.

Can you think what that might be?

Well, let me ask you…

Are you trying to build a massage practice? Are you hoping to get more clients? Are you feeling it out to see how it goes? Or have you committed to building the business of your dreams…. no matter what!

Many therapists can’t wait to finish massage school, find the ideal location for their practice, and jump right in there looking for ways to fill their schedule book with clients. But when things don’t work out quite as smoothly as they expected, they get frustrated and give up all too easily…. because they never stopped to make that all important decision that they were absolutely committed to building a successful massage business.

This decision is a turning point. It announces to the world that not succeeding is no longer an option. This decision will inspire you to take action, even when things get rough.

My husband Francis is also a massage practitioner (jointly we have over 30 years in the profession). Early on in his career he traveled with motivational speaker, Anthony Robbins, as his personal massage therapist. One of the things that Tony used to say was, “To get new results you must take new actions, and all actions are fathered by a decision.”

So, what fundamental decision have you committed to regarding your massage practice? And is it a decision that inspires you to take action? Can you write it down somewhere that you will see on a daily basis?

OK, so you have made your decision… but do you believe it? Do you have the confidence in yourself to carry it through? In his classic book, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill said that if you can conceive of something and believe that you can do it, then you can! And the more you believe in yourself the more likely you are to achieve your goals and manifest your dreams.

So what are your beliefs about:

Your skills as a massage therapist?
Your ability to attract your ideal clients?
Your ability to build and sustain a successful massage practice?
Your ability to create prosperity and abundance (and maybe even complete financial freedom) in your life?

Because until you believe that you can do it, you won’t take the sustained action necessary to build a thriving business. And that would be a terrible shame because you have unique gifts to share in a way that nobody else can, and there are people for you to work with that no one else can help in quite the same way as you.

So, if your “belief muscles” are a little atrophied, how do you build them up? Here are some things you can do:

Write a list of all the reasons why you WILL succeed in your business and read it every day and every night.
Create a concise “belief statement” or declaration and post it where you will see it often.
Listen to and read about how others have succeeded.
Once you have made your committed decision just get in action and then make course corrections as you go. It is always easier to make adjustments when you are in motion, whereas procrastination will get you nowhere. And remember, getting in action reduces fear and doubt.
Work with a coach or mentor to help keep you on track.

So let’s face it, as you grow your business there will be times when you will feel challenged, when you have to move outside your comfort zone, when you make mistakes, and when you doubt yourself and your abilities. This happens to us all! And you can either let these things undermine your confidence and sabotage your success, or use them to strengthen your decision to build the business of your dreams…no matter what!

A Native American elder once described his own inner turmoil like this: “It feels as if there are two dogs inside of me. One of the dogs is always fearful, anxious and filled with doubt. The other dog is playful and confident. The worried dog fights the joyful dog all the time.” When asked by his friend which dog wins, he thought about it for a moment and replied, “The one I feed the most.”

So which dog do you feed? The one that is doubtful and full of fear, or the dog that is joyful and successful? The choice is yours alone to make. But don’t make it lightly. Because the answer will greatly influence the success not only of your massage business, but of your entire life.

Massage is the act of relaxing body muscles by applying pressure through an act of kneading softly. The practice is known to be therapeutic in all aspects in terms of physical, physiological and psychological. Massage involves a manual or mechanical motion or vibration around the body. Although the mostly targeted areas are the muscles and joints, other body tissues that benefit from the action include tendons, the skin, ligaments and some of the lymphatic organs. What’s more, carefully applied massage on the temple can help relax the mind and the brain.

Massage therapy has become a practice that is being carried out professionally. People who are engaged in this profession are known as masseurs. They have their own special rooms in which their clients are offered the services. The client either lies or sits on a massage table or chair or lies flat on a mat on the floor. The body is either fully or partly unclothed or covered with towels or a blanket. The services are becoming more and more popular and many people are now demanding for them since they have been proved to have a clinical effect on many mental disorders.

The massage therapy has a long history that dates back to Rome, Greece and Mesopotamia civilization. Writings on the practice have also been found in these places. One book that has been constantly referred to in relation to massage is the Bible, which shows that the wives of the ancient kings in the Bible were accustomed to the practice and they would use olive oil in the process. The use of oil makes the process less frictional, not forgetting that the oil has a soothing effect on the skin.

Massage takes different forms, depending on the geographical region. In the Chinese culture for example, massage is carried out using different parts of the body like the fingers, arms and feet! The application of pressure through the massage process is sometimes combined with acupuncture and the resultant process is called acupressure. Massage therapy takes on other forms and names like ayurveda. This is a practice that entails, meditation, application of pressure on the body organs, yoga and application of herbal drugs.

Balinese massage is yet another form that entails rolling the skin and kneading at the same time. To make the process less painful, the masseur makes use of aroma therapy, such that the mind of the client is diverted from the process and is made to concentrate on the different aromas.

Barefoot massage therapy is a massage technique that concentrates on the sole of the feet. Also known as reflexology, the technique is believed to have a direct positive relaxation effect on the mind. The theory behind reflexology is that the feet harbor reflexive nerves that are directly connected to other parts of the body and through which the massage effect flows to the brain. Whatever your choice of massage technique is, one thing we must all agree with is that massage, when done in the proper way, has a healing effect.

Many people with mesothelioma are interested in trying complementary and alternative cancer treatments. If the cancer makes you feel as though you have little control over your health, alternative cancer treatments may offer some hope. But many alternative cancer treatments are unproved and dangerous.

Alternative cancer treatments will not cure mesothelioma, but they may help you cope with signs and symptoms caused by mesothelioma and mesothelioma treatments. Common signs and symptoms such as anxiety, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, pain, difficulty sleeping, and stress may be lessened by alternative treatments.

Use alternative cancer treatments as a supplement to treatments you receive from your doctor — not as a substitute for medical care. While alternative cancer treatments, such as acupuncture, may reduce nausea or pain, they generally aren’t powerful enough to replace medications from your doctor. Work closely with your doctor to determine the right balance between traditional medicines and alternative cancer treatments.

These 11 alternative cancer treatments have shown some promise in helping people with mesothelioma.

1-Acupuncture.

During acupuncture treatment, a practitioner inserts tiny needles into your skin at precise points. Studies show acupuncture may be helpful in relieving nausea caused by chemotherapy. Acupuncture may also help relieve pain in people with mesothelioma cancer.

Acupuncture is safe if it’s performed by a licensed practitioner using sterile needles. Ask your doctor for names of trusted practitioners. Acupuncture isn’t safe if you’re taking blood thinners or if you have low blood counts, so check with your doctor first.

2-Aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy uses fragrant oils to provide a calming sensation. Oils, infused with scents such as lavender, can be applied to your skin during a massage or the oils can be added to bath water. Fragrant oils also can be heated to release their scents into the air. Aromatherapy may be helpful in relieving nausea, pain and stress.

Aromatherapy can be performed by a practitioner, or you can use aromatherapy on your own. Aromatherapy is safe, though oils applied to your skin can cause allergic reactions.

3-Biofeedback.

You use your mind to control various body functions, such as heart rate and blood flow, during biofeedback therapy. A biofeedback therapist uses an electronic device to monitor a specific body function, such as muscle tension or your heart rate. The device uses a beeping sound or a flashing light as cues, for instance to tell you that your heart rate is slowing down or your muscles are becoming more relaxed. Working with the biofeedback therapist, you learn to control these functions by paying attention to the cues.

Biofeedback may be helpful in relieving pain in people with cancer. Biofeedback is safe when you work with a certified biofeedback therapist. With practice, you can learn to do biofeedback on your own.

4-Exercise.

Exercise may help you manage signs and symptoms during and after cancer treatment. Gentle exercise such as walking or swimming may help relieve fatigue and stress and help you sleep better.

If you haven’t already been exercising regularly, check with your doctor before you begin an exercise program. Start slowly, adding more exercise as you go. Aim to work your way up to at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week.

5-Hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a deep state of concentration. During a hypnotherapy session, a therapist may hypnotize you by talking in a gentle voice and helping your relax. He or she will then help you focus on goals, such as controlling your pain and reducing your stress.

Hypnosis may be helpful for people with cancer who are experiencing anxiety, pain and stress. It may also help prevent anticipatory nausea and vomiting that can occur if chemotherapy has made you sick in the past. When performed by a certified therapist, hypnosis is safe. But tell your therapist if you have a history of mental illness.

6-Massage therapy.

During a massage, your practitioner kneads your skin, muscles and tendons in an effort to relieve muscle tension and stress and promote relaxation. Several massage methods exist. Massage can be light and gentle, or it can be deep with more pressure. Studies have found massage can be helpful in relieving pain in people with cancer. It may also help relieve anxiety, fatigue and stress.

Massage can be safe if you work with an understanding massage therapist. Many cancer centers have massage therapists on staff, or your doctor can refer you to a massage therapist who regularly works with people who have cancer.

Don’t have a massage if your blood counts are low. Ask the massage therapist to avoid massaging near surgical scars, radiation treatment areas or tumors. If you have cancer in your bones or other bone diseases, such as osteoporosis, ask the massage therapist to use light pressure, rather than deep massage.

7-Meditation.

Meditation is a state of deep concentration when you focus your mind on one image, sound or idea, such as a positive thought. When meditating, you might also do deep-breathing or relaxation exercises. Meditation may help people with cancer by relieving anxiety, pain and stress.

Meditation is generally safe. You can meditate on your own for a few minutes once or twice a day or you can take a class with an instructor.

8-Music therapy.

During music therapy sessions, you might listen to music, play instruments, sing songs or write lyrics. A trained music therapist may lead you through activities designed to meet your specific needs, or you may participate in music therapy in a group setting. Music therapy may help relieve pain and control nausea and vomiting.

Music therapy is safe and doesn’t require any musical talent to participate. Many medical centers have certified music therapists on staff.

9-Relaxation techniques.

Relaxation techniques are ways of focusing your attention on calming your mind and relaxing your muscles. Relaxation techniques might include activities such as visualization exercises or progressive muscle relaxation. Relaxation techniques may be helpful in relieving anxiety and fatigue. They may also help people with cancer sleep better.

Relaxation techniques are safe. Typically a therapist leads you through these exercises and eventually you may be able to do them on your own.

10-Tai chi.

Tai chi is a form of exercise that incorporates gentle movements and deep-breathing. Tai chi can be led by an instructor, or you can learn tai chi on your own following books or videos. Practicing tai chi may help relieve stress. It may also be helpful if you’re having difficulty sleeping at night.

Tai chi is generally safe. The slow movements of tai chi don’t require great physical strength, and the exercises can be easily adapted to your own abilities. Still, talk to your doctor before beginning tai chi. Don’t participate in any tai chi moves that cause pain.

11-Yoga.

Yoga combines stretching exercises with deep breathing. During a yoga session, you position your body in various poses that require bending, twisting and stretching. There are many types of yoga, each with its own variations. Yoga may provide some stress relief for people with cancer. Yoga has also been shown to improve sleep and reduce fatigue.

Before beginning a yoga class, ask your doctor to recommend an instructor who regularly works with people with health concerns, such as cancer. Avoid yoga poses that cause pain. A good instructor can give you alternate poses that are safe for you.

You may find some alternative treatments work well together. For instance, deep breathing during a massage may provide further stress relief.

Stripped off all pretense or flourishes, the basic intent of therapeutic massage is to manipulate the soft tissues purposefully to help heal the damaged, sore, bruised or otherwise impaired part of the body. There are, however, a seemingly vast number of specific specialized techniques and types of massage. There is Sports Massage, Myofascial Massage, Neuromuscular Massage, Swedish Massage, Acupressure, Thai Massage, Watsu and Hydrotherapeutic Massage. The massage therapist must look at the different kinds, examine their techniques and decide what is appropriate for their client.

This may seem an insurmountable difficulty, but it is not. You can easily divide the basic techniques of massage therapy into two categories: Eastern (or Oriental or Asian) and Western. Although there are hybrids of these two major categories of therapeutic massage, the techniques remain distinct. There are clear indicators of the focus and style of massage in hybrids.

Eastern Massage at its most traditional bases its massage techniques on a pressure point system. While the philosophy of Thai Massage, Shiatsu, An Mo and Tui Na refers to the existence of some form of universal life force of energy, the actual technique involves working on specific points of the body. In Acupressure, for example, there are 365 acupoints on the body. A practitioner of this method uses the fingertips or hands to press on a specific point. This pressure, applied for a specific length of time, may relieve the pain, reduce tension, increase circulation, eliminate toxins and prevent nausea. In Reflexology, the practitioner utilizes reflex zones. Each point on the foot represents a specific part of the human anatomy. A point may have an association with a specific organ, gland or other body part. Pressing on the Reflex point helps remove congestion or imbalance within the body. This, in turn, prevents or removes disease and illness.

In the classic form of Western massage, there are no specific acupoints. The practitioner uses 5 basic hand motions to relieve stress, reduce tension and help the body heal itself. These 5 points for Classic Massage or Swedish Massage bear French nomenclature. They are Effleurage, Petrissage, Frictions, Tapotement and Vibration. Effleurage is long, smooth motions while Petrissage refers to a kneading of the flesh. In Frictions, a practitioner makes circular movements with the hands while in Tapotement the hands perform a tapping or percussion-like movements. With Vibration, the therapist uses two hands or thumbs to shake the flesh.

In Classic Western Massage, the hand and its parts work to manipulate the flesh. In Swedish Massage Therapy, the body is the entire canvas of the practitioner. In variations of Classic Massage, such as Sports Massage, the therapist usually focuses on a specific body part. In Traditional and modern forms of Asian Massage Therapy, the practitioner may utilize the fingers and other parts of the body to free energy. The desire is to use the techniques to unblock the channels for the entire body.

A massage therapist needs to know the different techniques. Although he or she may prefer a specific type of massage therapy, it is necessary to understand the essential differences and their application. In addition, a practitioner needs to know the necessity to adapt the techniques of massage therapy to the client. This includes realizing adjustments are essential when dealing with the specific needs of clients.

There are several individuals requiring alterations or adjustments in technique. This applies to both Western and Eastern approaches. The factors for which a therapeutic masseuse must make modifications include body type, age, pregnancy, disability and even gender. A practitioner has to be able to assess and tweak their approach accordingly.

Heavily padded or thin, bony clients require different techniques. You do not use Tapotement on a small, slender individual. This may produce bruising. In the least, the action can be uncomfortable. In the case of well-padded clients, you will have to increase the depth of your massage. Otherwise, you will not be able to affect the circulatory system.

Males and females have different requirements. During pregnancy, a practitioner will need to adjust the mat, pad or massage table to address the various trimesters. The length of the massage may not correspond to a comfortable time for the woman. At 4 months, it may be difficult to lie on the stomach. Later, it may also be hard to maintain a position on the back. There is also the question of depth of massage and massaging the stomach. With the male, therapists may need to apply greater pressure too manipulate the larger muscle bulk.

Another factor is age. You do not apply the same force or use the same technique for either the elderly or infants. In Tui Na, the form for infants differs from that for adults. The same is true for Western Massage Therapy. In both the elderly and the very young, a practitioner does not utilize heavy hands. Therapists also avoid pressure on fragile bones. If the practitioner knows his or her craft and understands the need to vary and adapt his or her technique, there should never be a problem.

Research on massage therapy, and its benefits, continues to show that it reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases endorphins, and the circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Research has also shown that therapeutic massage relaxes muscles, and improves range of motion (ROI).

While massage does not increase muscle strength, massage can increase muscle tone. Therapeutic massage also helps the body’s homostatic functions thereby decreasing the amount of time needed to recover after exercise or injury which is often caused by muscle stiffness (inflexibility). Massage helps in keeping the proper amount of fluid circulating between muscle fibers, and in rehydrating dehydrated fibers.

Joan Borysenko (www.joanborysenko.com), a medical scientist, licensed clinical psychologist, and cofounder of the Mind/Body Clinic at Harvard Medical School, had this to say when interviewed by the Massage Journal, in 1999:

“Often times people are stressed in our culture. Stress-related disorders make up between 80-and-90 percent of the ailments that bring people to family-practice physicians. What they require is someone to listen, someone to touch them, someone to care. That does not exist in modern medicine.

One of the complaints heard frequently is that physicians don’t touch their patients any more. Touch just isn’t there. Years ago massage was a big part of nursing. There was so much care, so much touch, so much goodness conveyed through massage. Now nurses for the most part are as busy as physicians. They’re writing charts, dealing with insurance notes, they’re doing procedures and often there is no room for massage any more.

I believe massage therapy is absolutely key in the healing process not only in the hospital environment but because it relieves stress, it is obviously foundational in the healing process any time and anywhere.”

In the past century research on the benefits massage therapy has yeilded some very encouraging findings.

There is research showing that Office workers felt less stress, experienced heightened alertness and increased performance, when getting regular massage sessions. Some of the other findings from research on the benefits of massage therapy are:

University students, in New Jersey, massaged before an exam showed a significant decrease in anxiety and respiration rates. It was also found they had a measurable increase their white blood cell count and in the production of T-cells so important to the immune system.

After receiving therapeutic massage a group of cancer patients experienced reduced pain and anxiety.

An university study found that mothers who had recently suffered the death of a child, experienced reduced levels of depression after receiving therapeutic massage.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) conducted studies that found therapeutic massage was beneficial in improving weight gain in HIV infants.

Reseachers at the Touch Research Institute (University of Miami) found therapeutic massage helpful in reducing blood pressure. The same research has found that therapeutic massage helps in reducing pain in migraine sufferers.

Some of the other benefits of therapeutic massage are:

The skin

 Improves tone and elasticity
Improves skin nourishment
Aids in normalizing glandular functions

Skeletal system (Myofascial)

 Relieves stiff joints
Assists in proper body alignment

Muscular system

Reduces fibrosis and adhesions in fibers
Assists in maintaining flexibity
Can relax or stimulate fibers
Relieves tension, and stiffness

Circulatory system

 Improves cell nutrition
Improves cell oxygen supply
Decreases blood pressure

Nervous system

 Stimulates nerves
Relieves insomnia
Promotes a state of well-being

Lymphatic system

 Increases circulation
Flushes out toxins and metabolic wastes

Athletes

 Improves flexibility and ROI
Relieves tight and sore muscles
Decreases recovery time after exercise or injury

Massage therapy can be defined as the manipulation of soft tissue. Massage therapy has physical, physiological, and psychological effects, in other words, it can affects the mind, body, and spirit. The word “massage” comes from the French meaning “friction or kneading”, the Arabic word “massa” meaning “to touch, feel, or handle”, and the Latin “massa” meaning “mass, dough”. An older origin may have been from the Hebrew “me-sakj” meaning “to anoint with oil” and the ancient Greek “anatripsis” or Latin “frictio” was the word for massage.

During a massage, soft tissue, consisting of muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, lymphatic vessels, organs and other connective tissue, can be in manipulated in a number of ways. These include with pressure, tension, motion, vibration – all either moving or stationary, structured or unstructured. Massage strokes can be applied with the hands, soft fists, fingers, thumbs, elbows, forearms, and feet. There are over 80 recognized massage modalities or types of massage. The most stated reasons for introducing massage as therapeutic has been due to client demand and perceived clinical effectiveness.

During a massage, the client is positioned on either a massage table or massage chair. The massage table is well- padded for comfort, easily cleaned between clients, and has a padded horseshoe-shaped head support to allow for proper positioning of the neck and easy breathing while the client is facedown. The massage chair is also well-padded, easily cleaned, and offers a padded horseshoe-shaped headrest but the client remains in a more upright, sitting position. Typically, a chair massage is for a shorter duration from 5 to 15 minutes and is done with the client fully clothed. A table massage session usually lasts from 30 to 90 minutes with the client partially or completely undressed under a sheet and/or blanket. Often pillows or bolsters are used to help with body positioning to add to the comfort during the session. Massage tables and chairs are typically portable and can be easily setup almost anywhere.

In the United States, the most common type of massage therapy is Swedish massage and often it is simply referred to as “relaxation massage, “European massage” or simply “Swedish”. A Swedish massage session is typically very gentle and relaxing. The session usually consists of long smooth strokes with kneading & circular movements that work on the superficial layers of the muscle. There are many different kinds of massage – such as Deep Tissue Massage, Neuromuscular Massage, Sports Massage, Heated Stone Massage, Myofascial Tissue Release and Prenatal Massage just to name a few. Each modality, or type of massage, is used for to achieve different results and treat different conditions. Usually modalities are blended together in one session to attain the different results requested by the client. The goal of your massage will determine what modality or modalities the massage therapist will use. The question to ask yourself is – “what is my goal for my massage session?” Is the massage for relaxation, stress management, relief from chronic pain, rehabilitation of an injury, relief from frequent headaches, or improvement of flexibility and range of motion. Let your massage therapist know what kind of results you are looking for and let her/him do the rest.

Often, a massage therapist will use essential oils during the massage session. This is called “aromatherapy”. Aromatherapy is defined as the use of essential oils for physical and emotional well-being. It is known that essential oils have healing properties on both physical and emotional levels. Only nature can product whole essential oils. Essential oils are found as tiny droplets contained in different plant parts such as leaves, stems, bark, flowers, roots, and fruits. Each essential oil has its own unique set of healing properties and can relax, energize, reduce headaches, or relief stress to name just a few. One of the most common essential oils used in massage is lavender.

A heated stone massage session typically consists of Swedish massage with the addition of heated, smooth stones held in the hands of the massage therapist. Usually heated stones are also placed on the back, abdomen, behind the neck, and even between the toes to add an extra element of relaxation to the session. Heated stones can be very effective at warming and loosening tight muscles. Typically, the pressure used during heated stone massage is somewhat on the lighter side and can be ideal for those that have very tight muscles, but do not like a lot of pressure.

Sports massage is specifically designed for those that are involved in physical activity and sports. You can certainly benefit from this type of massage even if you are not a professional athlete. Anyone who is physically active and works out regularly can benefit. The focus of this type of massage is more about helping the body recovery after a work out or sporting event as well as preventing and treating injuries. Regular massage can also enhance athletic performance.

Sports massage consists of a combination of techniques and the strokes are typically faster than Swedish massage. Also included in this modality are techniques to warm up and/or cool down the muscles along with facilitated stretching to help increase flexibility and range of motion.

There are numerous theories of how massage therapy really does affect the body. Some theories suggest that massage may stimulate the release of chemicals in the body such as endorphins or serotonin to facilitate relaxation, or the “gate of control theory” suggesting the massage itself may help block the pain signals sent to the brain. It is known that massage therapy does activate the parasympathetic nervous system which is the nervous system that controls “relaxation & digestion” and that may help explain those stomach gurgles you hear during your session.

The best way to find a massage therapist is ask a friend or healthcare professional, such as chiropractor, family doctor, or personal trainer, to recommend one. Be sure to ask the massage therapist about their training, experience, and license credentials. Also, ask your insurance company about coverage as some insurance plans will pay some or all of the session fees. If not, check into your flex spending plan or health saving accounts as often you can use one of these to pay for the sessions.

Remember… good health and wellness is a choice.

When most people think of massage, facial massage rarely comes to mind, but your face is like your body when it comes to working muscles. Similar to other massage techniques, facial massage therapy helps to promote relaxation and relieve tension. It also increases circulation to help restore energy to your face and your body. Have you ever noticed that your skin looks more pale and puffy in the morning than it did the night before? This is the result of less blood flow to the face and a facial massage is the perfect solution for getting your blood flowing again to restore its healthy glow.

However, in this current economy most people can’t afford to keep getting massages on a regular basis. After all, they can cost $60 or more per session, and many people feel like they need a massage almost every day. Obviously, that would get very expensive very quickly.
